4.5.7.2 Sample Storage

Storage of samples should be carried out in order to guarantee their integrity, traceability and conservation at all times. All significant materials used and produced during a study should be clearly identified and stored for a period depending on the duration of the study, regional laws and/or research institution regulations. The identification includes details about methods/protocols used. If the storage conditions are critical—temperature, humidity, etc.—these have to be properly monitored and the corresponding records properly kept.

GLPs identify and require an archivist role who is in charge of storage and archiving of samples and documents. The position of archivist, requiring specific but not massive training, is a good solution in an institution of a certain size/magnitude, where these tasks drain time and effort away from primary research activities.
